The Tree We Didn't Cut
Any MeetingAfter a Hard CampoutSummer Camp
We needed firewood tonight, and there was a perfectly good dead tree standing right at the edge of camp. We left it standing, because a standing dead tree is still part of the ecosystem — homes for insects and birds long after it stops being a tree to us. Respecting the outdoors sometimes means leaving something alone even when it would be convenient not to. That restraint is the whole point of conservation.
