Scout Rank

The starting point — learn the basics and join the troop.

Scout rank is the joining rank — it establishes foundational knowledge about who Scouts BSA is and what it stands for. Requirements focus on the Scout Oath, Scout Law, Motto, Slogan, and basic skills like the square knot. There's no specific time requirement, but most scouts complete it within a few weeks of joining.

Requirements are paraphrased for reference. Always verify current requirements at scouting.org or with your local council before a Board of Review.

What Scout Rank Actually Means

Scout rank is about orientation, not accomplishment. The goal is for a new scout to understand what they're joining — why the Oath and Law matter, how the patrol method works, and what the advancement trail looks like ahead of them. The Scoutmaster Conference at this rank is a conversation, not an evaluation.

Can Scouts Work on Multiple Ranks at Once?

Scouts can work on Scout, Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class requirements simultaneously. There's no requirement to complete one before starting another — many troops encourage new scouts to work on all four at once during their first year.

What Comes After Scout?

After earning Scout rank, the next goal is Tenderfoot. Work on camping skills, first aid basics, and physical fitness — all Tenderfoot requirements that can be started right away.

Scoutmaster Conference — Scout Rank

The Scout rank SM Conference is typically a welcoming conversation. Ask the scout what they were hoping for when they joined, what's surprised them, and what they're looking forward to. This is your first real chance to connect.
