Rank 4 of 76–12 months from Second Class

First Class Rank

The gateway rank — earn this and the path to Eagle is clear.

First Class is the most comprehensive of the early ranks and is often the one that separates scouts who stick with the program from those who don't. Requirements cover advanced navigation, multi-scenario first aid, outdoor cooking over multiple meals, water safety, and the first meaningful leadership requirement. Most scouts who reach First Class go on to Eagle.

Requirements are paraphrased for reference. Always verify current requirements at scouting.org or with your local council before a Board of Review.

What Does First Class Rank Require?

  • Advanced navigation: use a compass in the field, plan a route
  • Demonstrate proficiency in multiple first aid scenarios
  • Cook multiple meals outdoors, including a full day of meals
  • Demonstrate swimming ability or awareness of swimming safety
  • Lead a project or activity for your patrol or troop

This is a summary. The full requirement list is at scouting.org.

What First Class Rank Actually Means

First Class is where BSA considers a scout to be fully trained in basic skills. Everything before this rank is considered preparation; First Class is the baseline. The leadership requirement is real — not just attending meetings, but taking responsibility for an outcome. The first aid requirements at this rank are substantial and require hands-on demonstration, not just recitation.

Can Scouts Work on Multiple Ranks at Once?

First Class is the last rank that can be worked on simultaneously with earlier ranks. Once a scout earns First Class, Star requires a minimum active period as First Class before it can be earned.

What Comes After First Class?

After First Class, the path to Eagle becomes time-gated. Star requires at least 4 months as an active First Class scout in a position of responsibility. Plan the leadership position early — don't wait until the other requirements are done.

Scoutmaster Conference — First Class Rank

The First Class SM Conference is one of the most important conversations in a scout's early career. They've worked hard to get here. Ask what they're most proud of, what was hardest, and what Eagle means to them at this point. This is a natural moment to set the horizon and make a real plan for the road ahead.
